FAQs

A Notary Public is a state appointed officer who verifies a signer’s identity using approved identification and takes acknowledgment of the individual executing the document or administers an oath witnessing the signing of the document.

Notaries do not give legal advice or verify that documents are correct or legally binding.

Notarizing incomplete documents or those containing blank spaces is risky and unacceptable due to potential fraud. A Notary must ensure that a document is complete before a signing takes place and shall refuse service otherwise.

A Notary can refuse service if there’s a reasonable suspicion that a transaction is unlawful, improper or incomplete. Failing to provide acceptable identification at a signing appointment also serves as grounds to deny a notarization.

You’ll typically need a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID, to prove your identity to the notary.

No, notaries cannot provide legal advice. Their role is limited to witnessing the signing of documents and verifying identities.

The Notary Public must affirm that each signer is properly identified using acceptable identification and officiates the signing process insuring that documents are properly executed. This helps to prevent fraud. Documents must contain the proper notarial wording and text committing the signer.

Notary fees vary by location and the type of document. In most cases, there’s a standard fee for notarization, but additional charges may apply for traveling to your location and for requesting service after regular business hours.

A Notary Public is forbidden from preparing legal documents or acting as a legal advisor. Violators may be fined and/or imprisoned for practicing law unauthorized.

An apostille is a form of authentication for documents used in international transactions. You may need an apostille for certain documents if they will be used in a foreign country that is part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Yes! It’s a good idea to schedule an appointment to ensure a notary is available when you need them.

For a document to be notarized it must contain the proper notarial wording, text committing the signer, an original signature, and a completed certificate.

In the event the signer doesn’t have acceptable ID, two witnesses who are not named in the document and who do not have a financial interest in the document and who also have valid ID can be used as an alternative method to ID the signer.
